Fear and Loathing in Ria Bintan

Finally, a trip to call our own. We had Sydney back in 2004 but that was without some people. Now we have Bintan and everyone on board and stories to tell. Go onto Ashley's blog (grain.livejournal.com) for pictures and comments. For here, it's just a basic recap.

10 highlights:

1. Raindrops falling on our head when we arrived = no water sports to do. Sterling's mix up of Nirwana Hotel Resort and Nirwana Beach Club. Sorry, no bathroom slippers to bring home dude.

2. 3 guys and a girl sharing the same room (separated by a curtain) while TOPLESS and having a body scrub. Ashley feels terrified.

3. Dancing in the moonlight at the beach's club La Luna. Girls and tits galore. Ghim's lucky night (sort of).

3a. The Reaping starring Ronald Wan. Attacked by night creatures. Damsel in distress phoned Ghim the hero for help.

4. Kayaking and capsizing. Monster Kris attacks.

5. Snorkelling at Barucuda Island. Ronald survives.

6. Go-Karting! Geetha completes (almost) a full lap.

7. "Me and my fake tattoo friends," says Geetha. Kris turns "Constantine". Terence turns "Ah Beng". Ghim turns "Jewish". Adeline turns "perfume ad girl". Ashley turns "sexy back". Ronald turns "flamboyant french lover".

8. Sumptuous and cheap late dinner at Kelong Restaurant. Of Black pepper crabs, cereal prawns, fried tofu, crispy fried chicken sambal kangkong.

9. A wild night involving certain people doing crazy dares. Someone moaned very loudly, someone else stripped to his push-up undies, someone else humped a lamp and enjoyed it very much, someone else screwed someone else and then someone else screwed more of someone else and someone else played mr policeman.

10. Jumping jacks & star jumps. In briefs. Total humiliation.

Down Memory Lane

The gang. The kids. The zhu peng gou you. The fraternity. We have been called many names. Fellow mass commies are surprised (and jealous?) at how we managed to stay so close after graduation and bothered to meet up almost every other weekend and never failed to celebrate someone's birthday - usually with a bang. For nostalgia, I'm doing my best to chronicle the evolution of the gang, the kids, the zhu peng gou you, the insert-your-own-freaking-nickname. Enjoy the (ugly) photos too.

Year 1 (2001-2002). Terence, Juanita, Ronald, Adeline, Jacqueline and Xiuhui. Kris joins us on limited occasions because he was busy wooing girls in his own band. Other appearances include Matt, Min and Val Corera (goondusamylilypootoot!). Anyway, 1T05 ROCKS! Of course, there's 1T03 with Sterling, Ghim and their not-so-cool gang (I kid!) but we weren't that close yet.

Year 2 (2002-2003). Then the guys hung out. Terence and Ronald vs Ghim and Sterling in tennis. We know who's the better pair but we won't go there. And then the group consisted of Ghim, Sterling, Terence, Ronald, Adel, Jacqueline, Xiuhui and Kris. Adel broke up with Timothy and Terence was attached with Charissa. Oh yes, occasional appearances from Pauline at karaoke! Highlights include the Oh-La-La competition with Terence and Charissa, Sterling and Pauline. And Adeline's drama in Australia. Me dancing with Utt at Kelly Clarkson's showcase. Hehe.

Year 3 (2003-2004). The gang stayed pretty much the same. Occasional appearances from Ivy. And we made our first overseas trip to Sydney, Australia! Me, Ghim, Sterling, Kris, Adel, Charissa, Terence and Mylene.

Post-Graduation (2004-2006). The guys suffered traumatic disorders in the army. And several breakups. And several folks disappeared from the radar -- Terence and Jacqueline actually. Xiuhui got involved with church, Ben and marriage. Ashley got closer to the gang, including Ivy. Jacqueline went into la-la land and I think she's still stuck there sometimes. Memorable event (for me) was the flea market where you guys turned up to support, incl dearest vallie and chubby. And C. Chia too! :) And of cos our first xmas fashion runway at ashley's place in 2005 and a quieter xmas affair back in 2004. Cheers!

Post-Army (2006-Present). And so it was official in 2006. It was Ivy, Ashley, Ghim, Sterling, Kris, Adel and Me. 7 of us. All trying to squeeze in Ash's Colt and then Picanto. Best times we had then? In Geylang Serai wearing $1 masks and parading around!! Stripping me to my red undies on my birthday. Adeline's wild 21st birthday. Ashley's CEO garden party on her 24th birthday (we know who was the eye candy that night). Kris' incident. Not exactly a fun thing but it was something to remember. The folks who went to the hospital, who stayed and who went to his house to explain to his cool parents. What else? The farewells at airports for Adel and Kris. Those serious chats we had in East Coast between ash, me and sterling. And the every saturday camera whoring.

Of late, it's the resurgence of Terence Bro Terence. Occasional appearances include Xiuhui. Looking forward to her wedding in Dec. And there's Janice too. Occasional appearances from the fabulous and busy-with-American-boy Geetha. Sometimes I wish for simpler days like those in year 1 and 2. But I know people drifted and had to move on. And I'm very much happy now too with the zhu peng gou you I hang out with. Some have misgivings if we gonna be as close 10 years from now. For the record, I think we would still be close and strive to be. It's been a great 8 years and more to come.

So it was kris's belated birthday celebration at demsey and we decided to drink ourselves silly.

Ben decided his wedding photos with xiu hui wasn't enough and went for more with the birthday boy.

kris decided that he wasn't gonna play along anymore.

kris went for the "decent" feel throughout the night.

then he decided to take it one step further by being "holy".

kris carried on the persona as long as he could...

then he decided he couldn't take it any longer...

and unleashed the "inner nuisance" in him.. or was that me?

Kris's 24th Year of Existence
Last Saturday, we toasted to Kris's 24th year of existence. He showed us that celebrating through wining and dining wasn't as passive as it looks. There were definitely lots of loud guffaws and solicited screams.

Ronald also showed us that the best way to sabotage a game of Taboo was to sing a Hokkien song off key. I unfortunately wasn't able to take a picture of his ode to Chen Lei because I was doubled up in mirth.

Ghimz wished for more lard. All that exercising was a
total waste of time - decided he really did look better as cousin
of the fat bastard.

Three missing hands from the toast - Geetha, Adeline and Sterling.
Nvm, there will be more toasts ahead of us.

His furry paws and the lack of an opposable thumb proved
a challenge to give a toast too.
So he just sat and stared at some crotch.

Kris: The pepper, Mr-Hard-of-Hearing but truce anyway.

Aww... they were just standing around and behaving
like good schoolboys and girls.

They were proud of finishing a sausage platter all by themselves.

Ben was pleased with the magnitude of his fart while
Kris waved in joy at the fecal vapour.

Thus they solemnised their marriage in the presence of the
fecal spirit and vowed that never again will they smell another's
(with the exception of their own) fart.

And everybody smiled blissfully at the union.

Celebrity's Entourage on Dec 29th!

Since I don't have a blog of my own, allow me to post my birthday pictures and musings here. Thanks for indulging.

Thank you to those who showed up (roll call: Adeline, Ashley, Jack, Ghim, Geetha, Janice, Amalina, Xiuhui, Tristan, Calvin and Ja!) and being part of the celebrations.

I have already thanked you guys in my respective SMS-es but for the benefit of those who missed it from New York thoroughbred Sterling, stuck in Melbourne Kris to friends who chose to have holidays on my birthday (love you Ivy + Sheryl), here's a recap of the proceedings. It's pretty long, so skip if you want. I won't insist. No really.

1. Gave brief to Adeline on Christmas day itself to organize my 'surprise' party. Drinks on Friday night and Movie/Dinner on Saturday. I sort of planned it. I still wanted my surprise somehow.

2. Checked with Adel for updates the next day. She hasn't done anything. Had the audacity to say I micro managed her when all I wanted was to give her a little push. In the end, she got down to the planning of the 'surprise' which I must say was executed brilliantly. Love you.

3. Had dinner with Adel on Friday night. A last-min affair thanks to a cock-up. To Zouk for drinks and well well...

4. Settled into Phuture and Calvin soon enough bought 20 rounds of tequila shots and another 20 rounds of Baileys shots! + a bottle of red. Thanks for the rounds Cal but you really shouldn't have. Look what it did to you and others!

Anyway I drank and drank some more. Geetha and Janice saved their dignity, contented themselves with a glass and few shots and danced and posed and preened for pictures. Adeline spent most of the night nibbling/kissing/smiling everyone, including a surprised Janice (pictured below). Calvin challenged me to the shots so all in all, I really had one too many. But I survived, somehow. And some, not.

Strange things started to happen. Geetha and Janice made a move and left while Calvin apparently went out to take a call!

Leaving me and Adel alone. Next thing I knew, Adeline accidentally knocked the table and smashed a wine glass. I couldn't wait any longer for Calvin to return from his supposed call. He was un-contactable (called you a million times dude, seriously). And so we left shortly after. Story of the night: Birthday boy drank a lot, stayed sober, didn't get to hit the dance floor (fark!), had a friend who just disappeared halfway and had the good intentions to send a part-drunk/part-high girl home safely, which I did nonetheless.

Well, I could say I still had fun.

5. Next day woke up with a bad hangover (for the record: 1/3 of the 40 shots + few glasses of red). Still had buffet brunch with family at United Square. Almost puked. Got back home to take a nap, which took too long I suppose.

6. Adel called and asked what time am I reaching Jalean's place. Apparently Jalean's throwing a grazing party for her friends and she invited me along cos she made a cake for me. I was reluctant to go because it's Jalean's friends and I don't know them and I just wanna spend my birthday hanging out with my own friends. So I told Adel, "6.30pm I'll be at Jalean's place."

7. Took my own sweet time and got there at 7pm. Went up with Adel. I just wanted to have my cake, thank dearest & sweetest Ja and leave cos I wasn't really prepared to mingle with strangers.

8. Opened the door and SURPRISE! I saw Jack, Tristan, Xiuhui (yes, Xiuhui!), Lina and even Calvin posing and holding paper plates pasted with pictures of Mishca Barton, Jessica Alba, Natalie Portman, Emma Watson, Keira Knightley and pretending to be them. And plus a fan boy Tristan coming up to me profusely asking for an autograph while Ghim Khoon the photog kept snapping pictures away! And all I heard was, "Hey the STAR is here!" Damn right. I was pleasantly surprised!! So it's a "Ronald-Is-The- Celebrity" surprise and a grand entrance with papparazo shooting moi! AWESOME! COOL! I'm thoroughly surprised.

9. But hey, it was short-lived. Calvin pushed me and told me to hurry up. Jack and Xiuhui gave me the pissed off look and said I was late! Hello? I had every reason to be late because the surprise worked and convinced me I had to deliberately take my time to attend the "supposedly grazing party".

Anyway. We packed the cake (thank you Ja for hosting once again) and we left. Apparently, Ashley and G were at the restaurant holding the reservation and that explained the crazy rush. Perhaps could have pushed the reservation later or call it off and eat elsewhere? Fine, I won't micro-manage! :p

Adel later on explained to me how the flow was supposed to be: Reach Ja's, Get Surprised, Eat Cake, Open Presents, Photo Whore With The Celeb (read: me). Sadly, we didn't get to cam whore at Ja's place or do the whole celebrity thing proper since we had to rush to the restaurant. Nonetheless, thanks guys!!!

Grateful thanks to Adel especially for planning! And coming up with such a wonderful theme/idea with Kaya. You girls really know how to rock my world with pictures/faces of women I love. So it's a celebrity harem, huh? The whole star treatment was fantastic and honestly, the hurrying in fact was so celeb-like too (pushing the star into the house, pushing the star into the car, hurrying the star)...Ok, I'm getting carried away.

10. Got into the back of Calvin's MPV like a celeb too. He drove us to Waruku. Woo! Japanese! Got there and Ashley shot me a dirty look and said, "Late right?" I guess I had to keep explaining myself (on my birthday, no shit!) why I was late.

Pictures: From my entourage waiting for my arrival, my 'grand entrance', the surprise to the quick posing with cake before being ushered to another meet-the-fans location. Me esp like the Jack pretending to be my security guard picture and Lina the fan grabbing a piece of me picture. :)

11. And so we ate sushi. Fooled around. Sang a not-so-friendly birthday song!! Ate more sushi. Indulged in a lot of photo-whoring. Blew candles. Ate cake. Thanks Ash and Ja for the awesome cake! Love it!

Pictures: Entourage amused themselves with fantasies of being Mischa Barton etc and me feeding my harem ladies some cake and cream (the tasty kind of cake cream you know?).

12. And then we caught the film ACROSS THE UNIVERSE at Cine! Woo! @ my request of cos and I hope everyone enjoyed it more or less. The seats weren't so exciting but a naked Evan Rachel Wood would suffice. All You Need is Love, Love, Love!!!

13. Midnight and Ghim Khoon reminded me that my birthday's over. Bummer. Star treatment's over. And so the niceties were gone.

14. Opened presents downstairs at Gloria Jean's and here's what they are:

a. Geetha's tags from Agnes B! Love the bling! Love you even more!
b. Ghim's striped polo from Gap! Love the tee, not the SIZE! :p
c. Jack's UNWRAPPED book. Dude, there's free wrapping service at counter C in Kino. Thanks bro! You know I appreciate it. :)
d. Ashley's "My present is so nice if you don't want it I want it" Raoul card holder for me. Really like it! Finally you got taste. :)
e. Janice's Grey's Anatomy DVD Season 2!!! :) You really listened to what I say.
f. Amalina's "I'm Ronald Wan. I'm A STAR" tee. Love your creativity as always. Love you Kaya.

Guys Night Out

I'm trying not to talk too much here in case people think it's really my blog. Well, it fucking isn't. It's the group's blog but then again, nobody talks much here anyway.

Anyway.

Feels nice the other night to hang out with Ghim and Terence watching soccer (Arsenal vs Bolton / Liverpool vs Everton). Certainly miss the presence of Kris and Sterling. It's a nice guys' night out on a Sat night (after Zaid's Hari Raya late lunch) checking out the balls on telly and the boobs in the pub. Talking about the girls there and wanting to get their numbers. Of course, in the end no numbers cos we're ball-less.

Anyway.

Hope there would be more nights like this when Kris returns. Next up -- Arsenal vs Man Utd this Saturday!

The Sterling Festival & Ashley's Post Birthday (Hey, you're 25!)

Yes, I'm gonna lament on yet another figure departing the clique for greener pastures miles and miles away from motherfucking singapore (happy national day!)

And it's funny how I realise Sterling has been the ONLY one who has resisted change and watched all of us gone through our phases. He was right there from the beginning of the clique (Ghim, Terence, Xiuhui, Jacqueline, Adeline, Kris and Gorgeous Me). He saw how

1. Xiuhui got very acquainted with God and her bf and left;
2. Jacqueline got very acquainted with her sister, mom and gradually faded into near obscurity;
3. Adeline got into her dramas with a former rock band singer, misadventures with the hippo down under, cold war with me (ain't my fault, babe) and lots more;
4. Kris got into his commitment phobe phase (should i steady with her, should i steady not?)
5. Ghim and his misadventures down under too, his NS bitching days, his exercise regime which accounts to obsesssion and his recent rendezvous with his gf and occasional camoes;
6. Terence, um, huge hulaaboo breakup with miss singer-host and time out from the gang, then officer indulgence days, then absences, then more absences, then more and more...
7. My misadventuers down under as well (look, let's stop talking about the life jacket, blankets and go toilet alone thing already OK?) and certainly, my recent misaventures with the same hippo who can't write but insist on writing;
8. Ashley joining the gang, Ashley shouting at the gang, Ashley driving the gang, Ashley shouting at the gang again, Ashley more shouting again;
9. Ivy "Guys,I-am-tired" days, Ivy "Guys,my boss/work/whatever sucks" and Ivy "I-become-DJ" days (congrats girlfriend!);

Ok, in short, he has watched us transform majorly esp. relationships wise because we all became attached at one point or another during the recent 6 years (2001 - 2007) while he rejected advances from we know who (fellow heatwave member) and stayed the course to watch us fall, get up and grow. No wonder Sterling has always been so observant and judgemental. He's been watching us all along.

And that, is admirable. Kudos to you chap. Despite your self-important and self-righteous stances at times which is such a pain in my neck (no, not the ass), thank you for your sharp and pointed observations. I too notice something about you. You do care, despite your quietness, your perceived indifference or your nua attitude. I remember how Kris got burnt and amongst everyone (some were watching, some were negotiating with the butter factory BITCH, some were bringing kris along and telling him he's not OKAY despite his 'manly' insistence), you showed a lot of concern and care. Bravo.

Now you're on another journey altogether. I hope you fuck as many american girls as possible, come back like a fucking poser with an accent that will floor every naive cheena girl (Like, hello? That's awesome! How's life? hey kids, there's this pretty interesting application called twitter that I think you should try out. Basically it allows you to blog via SMS (to a UK number though) and if you hop over to my blog, you can see that little window on the right, that is how it is. The cool thing about it is that if you have people linked to your twitter via the phone (ala friendster etc.) they will get an update on their mobile phone everytime you update on twitter. Beats sending out mass messages and stuff.

My turn and time to rant since there's pretty much nothing else exciting happening on this dead blog.

If YOU are reading this (which i hope you do), you have to know that you are competitive, manipulative, deceitful, ungrateful and especially untalented. For crying out loud, do something abou the way you write. It's so bland and uninspiring. It's as if you're writing your own banal blog entries.

And please stop your 'I am doing this' or 'I would say this' narratives. You are not writing a blog entry. Nobody cares about your opinion. My senior editor once told me that nobody writes in first-person unless he/she is qualified and experienced to do so. Are YOU? I doubt so. You graduated with hardly any experience, save for a few amateur pieces written on student websites. Yet you gingerly applied for a senior position at a renowned publishing instituition in Singapore and well, got rejected. My Mandarin fails me, but I think the phrase is, "Bu Zhi Liang Li".

And stop referring to me as "that freelance writer" to any person or animal you have spoken to. You can't patronise me. My resume can bury you in no time so try harder. I chuckled when I heard you gave your namecard away stating you're an editor, trying to tell the whole world that you have arrived. Did you even dare to give your namecard months ago when you're just a nobody? Now that you have unsurped other people's position (read: my previous position), you are happily flaunting the new 'power' exonerated or conferred onto you. Enjoy it while it lasts. What they say is true -- If you're not a writer at either of the two biggest publishing houses in Singapore (for magazine titles at least), you're nobody. Nobody gives a rat ass if you're an editor or managing editor at some other new magazine. They call it the kid's magazine. I can't help but agree. What do you know? You don't learn anything. You don't even know what's a housestyle. Shame on you.

Stop the nursery rhymes by the way. Your headlines sound like a title to a pop-out book for three-year-olds. It's hilarious. No wonder I have industry insiders telling me how atrocious the magazine has become. Even if you get out of that dreadful place, may I suggest kindergarten teacher as the next career move? The kids would love to learn that A is for Apple and Spell V for Vitamins. Seriously, I wish you well.

Alright, i am here in melb, and i know i took a while to get back online (it was a tough period, sortta like rehab). anyway first of all, thanks for sending me off! I am really gratefully you guys took time out to come all the freaking way to the airport, and i really really really really appreciate it (though i know i might not show it, just not very good with emotions, lah!).

Melbourne has been fun so far. I've hardly realised there are so many mass commies here so yes, I haven't yet broken out of the comfort zone of people I already know to get to know too many locals. The weather is goooooood. like bordering on the high 10s and low 20s with STRONG CHILLING wind at night. loving it here.

A little insight to what I have been up to. We just moved into this lovely antique of a house. Supposedly built in 1866, the owner is a painter and hence it's kinda like a museum thingie. Will post pictures soon but you know cheapo me dont own a digital camera so when i do lay my hands on Val's camera i will show you guys how the house looks.

For the time being I am just gonna leave you guys with two things I've started to work on. One of those is a little tongue-in-cheek, totally sterling's idea actually.

Bitter in Shanghai

Having another blog sure has its merits when you know someone in particular is reading your main blog and you don't want to bitch in front of them - unless you're willing to forego the friendship.

Th first few days spent in Shanghai has been good, she and I walked a lot and she took me to various places. The only thing niggling me then was that she found it so tough to wake up in the morning so we usually miss the morning activity in Shanghai. I know i used to find it so tough to wake up in the monring. But once you've had a regime waking up at a certain time for work, it's just not so tough anymore.

"I'm so not a morning person."
"So what are you going to do when you have to work?"

She shrugs.

I know people who've bummed 5 years etc. They make me feel uncomfortable.

She has been bumming close to a year since she graduated.

Gee seriously... how do these people do it?

Yesterday while dining at a restaurant. (Gawd i will rant about those restaurants later) She made things a little difficult for the waiter. Struggling to find the chinese word "flavour" (I think it's 口味）she used the words, "味道“ (which means "taste")instead using examples like chocolate and strawberry to get her point across. The waiter says, "是甜的”.

She turns to me, her face very cross and says, "of course it's sweet, it's a dessert!" I told her the waitor might be confused by the usage of words but she insists she's right because she used chocolate as an example.

"You're a nightmare for the service sector."
"You have to let these people know, when you ask them things and they don't know, they don't find out. They just stand there. I know because I worked in the hotel industry before and if i can do a good job, so can they."
"Do you think you'll consider being in the hotel line?"
"Yes but I don't see a point going into it right now."
"Why not?"
"Why should I?"

The conversations ends with she's not ready to go out into the working world.

I don't know... It makes me feel uncomfortable.

I'm not sure this is the kind of friend I want and it makes me treasure you lot, a lot more. I miss you guys, wish you were here to do crazy stuff with me.

Right, so when our dearest Donald bought his macbook and walks around with it, we all thought that he has grown to be a bit more tech-savvy. I mean, afterall, he did set up his own home wireless network and connect it with a PC and a MAC at the same time. Personally, I felt like a proud parent, typically with tears in my eyes, watching my kid graduating from kindergarten 'cause we all know dear Donald has came a long way since his "only-know-MS word" days and if you have seen, his bad attempt at photoshop on his internship report.

But, we all thought wrong. Donald came calling me, panicking like a duck because the wire he brought home to transfer video from the DV can't fit into his PC's USB slot. You guys probably got it right - the cable is a FIREWIRE cable. HOW THE HECK is it supposed to fit into a USB slot!? I mean, you dont even need to try fitting it into be able to tell the difference between these two cables yes? And he doesnt realise till I tell him.

Just when we thought there was progress... oh well....

Sat night was fun, fun, fun. Had a great time at Icekimo (not before dinner at Chomp x 2) and then adeline had to abandon us. So we asked "WHAT TO DO?" as always. I said ECP, not becos i want to liao gao at carpark h. We went to camera whore! Again. And this time ashley really meant whoring (there's a particular pic ash looked damn sleazy but i'm not supposed to upload). one of the best photoshoots i had in ages. enjoy.

the night started out fine with us endorsing products. me for vitasoy, sterling for some chrysantheum tea and ashley, ntuc water bottle.

And then we decided to go a sequel to our vodka shots... Woooo.... No, I won't get naked.

A quick refresher on the plot of the Da Vinci Code

CHAPTER ONE:
Handsome yet unmarried historian Hugh Heckman stood in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C., squinting through the bulletproof glass at the U.S. Constitution. Suddenly, he made an amazing discovery.

''My God!'' he said, out loud. ``This is incredible! Soon I will say what it is.''

CHAPTER TWO:
''What is it?'' said a woman Heckman had never seen before who happened to be standing next to him. She was extremely beautiful, but wore glasses as a sign of intelligence.

''My name is Desiree Legume,'' she said.

Heckman felt he could trust her.

''Look at this!'' he said, pointing to the Constitution.

''My God, that's incredible!'' said Desiree.

``It's going to be very surprising when we finally reveal what we're talking about!''

CHAPTER THREE:
''Yes,'' said Hugh, ``incredible as it seems, there are extra words written in the margin of the U.S. Constitution, and nobody ever noticed them until now! They appear to be in some kind of code.''

''Let me look,'' said Desiree. ``In addition to being gorgeous, I am a trained codebreaker. Oh my God!'' ''What is it?'' asked Hugh in an excited yet concerned tone of voice.

''The message,'' said Desiree, ``is . . . ''

But just then, the chapter ended.

CHAPTER FOUR:
''It's a fiendishly clever code,'' explained Desiree. 'As you can see, the words say: `White House White House Bo Bite House, Banana Fana Fo Fite House, Fe Fi Mo Mite House, White House.' ''

''Yes,'' said Hugh, frowning in bafflement. ``But what can it possibly mean?''

''If I am correct,'' said Desiree, ``it is referring to . . . the White House!''

''My God!'' said Hugh. ``That's where the president lives! Do you think . . . ''

''Do I think what?'' said Desiree.

''I don't know,'' said Hugh. ``But we're about to find out.''

CHAPTER FIVE:
Hugh and Desiree crouched in some bushes next to the Oval Office.

''We'd better hurry up and solve this mystery,'' remarked Desiree anxiously. ''It's only a matter of time before somebody notices that the Constitution is missing.'' She had slipped it into her purse at the National Archives while the guard wasn't looking.

''The answer must be here somewhere,'' said Hugh, studying the ancient document, which was brown from age and the fact that he had spilled Diet Peach Snapple on it.

''Wait a minute!'' he said. ``I've got it!''

''What?'' said Desiree, her breasts heaving into view.

''The answer!'' said Hugh. ``It's . . .

But just then, shots rang out.

CHAPTER SIX:
''That was close!'' remarked Desiree. ``Fortunately, those shots had nothing to do with the plot of this book.''

''Yes,'' said Hugh. ``Anyway, as I was saying, the answer is to hold the Constitution up so that it is aligned with the White House and the Washington Monument. . . . There, do you see what I mean?''

''My God!'' said Desiree, seeing what he meant.

``It's . . . '' ''Hold it right there,'' said the president of the United States.

CHAPTER SEVEN:
'' . . . and so you see,'' concluded the president, ``you two uncovered a shocking and fascinating secret that, if it should ever get out, could change the course of history.'' ''Mr. President,'' said Desiree, ``thank you for that riveting and satisfying explanation, which will be fleshed out into much greater detail once there is a publishing contract.''

''Also,'' noted Hugh, ``we may use some beverage other than Snapple, depending on what kind of product-placement deals can be worked out.''

''Good,'' said the president. ``Now can I have the Constitution back?'' They all enjoyed a hearty laugh, for they knew that the movie rights were also available.

Sharapova, Hingis coming to town

Negotiations are underway to bring tennis stars Maria Sharapova and Martina Hingis to Manila in November and Team Asia’s Joey Fornier told The Star yesterday it’s 70 percent sure the three-day, two-night visit will push through. Sharapova, 19, is guaranteed at least P6.5 Million and Hingis, 25, P2.5 Million to appear in separate three-hour clinics and play in a best-of-3 match at the Araneta Coliseum. Team Asia is packaging the three-nation tour with Manila as the second leg after Singapore and before Beijing.

"We’re close to finalizing the deal," said Fornier. "We’re down to the small details like agreeing to how many companions they will bring. Maria has an entourage of 15 and Martina, 12. Maria will be coming from the US and Martina from Switzerland."

Team Asia, an entertainment events promoter, is an affiliate of Team Ltd. of Singapore with a branch in Beijing. The Team group was formed eight years ago and has brought in Mariah Carey, Boyzone, Michael Jackson, the Black Eyed Peas, Westlife, F-2 and F-4 to Manila. It recently tied up with Solar Sports in telecasting the "Rumble at the Bay" boxing card on Roxas Boulevard and Rodel Mayol’s bid for the World Boxing Council minimumweight title in Tokyo.

Fornier said Team Asia is also planning to stage a P15 Million charity skins golf match between the Korean pair of K. J. Choi and Grace Park and the Philippine tandem of Frankie Miñoza and Jennifer Rosales at the Camp John Hay course in Baguio City in October. Fornier said the teams will play for pot money in each hole with a commitment to donate all or part of the winnings to a local charity.

Sharapova and Hingis have played each other thrice this year. In their latest encounter in Tokyo, Hingis upset Sharapova, 6-3, 6-1. In two previous matches, Sharapova beat Hingis, 6-3, 6-3, in Indian Wells and 6-3, 6-4, in Dubai. Fornier said Sharapova will conduct a clinic at the Manila Polo Club and Hingis, a similar clinic at the Alabang Country Club the day before the Big Dome match. Both clinics will be open to 30 players within the 12 to 16-year-old bracket.

The 6-2 Sharapova turned pro in 2001 and was ranked No. 1 last year. She won the Wimbledon crown in 2004 and has earned over $5.6 Million in her career. This year, the Siberian blond will bankroll about $30 Million from prize earnings and endorsement contracts. Considered the highest-paid female athlete ever, Sharapova has her own perfume with Parlux fragrances, her own video game and her own line of handbags designed by a Japanese company. She also pitches for Nike, Prince, Speedminton, Motorola, Canon, TAG Heuer, Honda Japan and Colgate-Palmolive.

The 5-7 Hingis was ranked No. 1 in 1997 when she won three of four Grand Slam titles. She has bagged 40 career championships, including three Australian Opens, and earned over $18.5 Million since turning pro in 1994.

While I continue to lament on the quiet and non-election buzz over the Western front (I would really love to exercise my civil and political right and liberties), let us ponder over the interesting issues the opposition has raised over the days, which of course bugged me because the ruling party PAP has chosen to ignore or has given equipvocal answers. Or rather chosen to focus intensely on Gomez gate. Yes, Mr Gomez did wrong, and if he had dishonest intentions to discredit the government, let's deal with it later. People want to move on. It's the bread-and-butter issues us singaporeans are worrying and more concerned about. Can we cope with the rising cost of living? Would there an a public transport fee hike? Will my dad be out of job tomorrow? Will your mom be out of job tomorrow? What will you do about means testing in hospitals, Mr Khaw? Can the Government upgrade lifts in opposition-held wards like Potong Pasir, where there are many older residents who have to climb stairs because the lift does not stop on every level, despite Mr Chiam's valiant efforts to upgrade. After all, every Singapore, in any ward or constituency, paid their taxes, which go to the town councils, which go to the lifts we're taking everyday.

It makes me really sad, as a Singaporean, to know the past few days during election fever has been contrived and simplified to the mishandling of a form at the elections department by an opposition candidate. Have we been reduced to a selfish mentality? 'You scratch my back, I scratch yours?' 'You give me lift upgrades and parks, I vote for you?' People from the ground wants to move on. They want to know. We want to know. Give us answers, Mr Lee. So that we can really move ahead and stay together, like you said.

Soon after the People's Action Party won 75 per cent of the vote that year (2001), the cost of living went up, said Mr Low, referring to the hikes in goods and servies tax and public transport fares. "I hope everyone will remember the 2001 election when 75 per cent of voters supported the PAP. In the end, what happened? People continued to lose their jobs and the PAP Government raised the GST," he said.

Mr Low pointed out that while the increase in oil prices had led to higher costs of ultilities, the main reason behind this was privatisation. "Because of privatisation, the companies need to make money, your money. And so your ultilities bills are higher, and this is made worse by the increase in oil prices," he said.

Citing health-care costs as an example, he said the rise was because the Government "refuses to spend more on health care. It would act only when facing pressure, he said. For example, "under political pressure, they set up Medifund after losing seats in the 1991 election".

"What is the criteria...Who can be considered the rich? Could those with no money to afford medical services be eventually considered rich as well?" he asked. Ms Lim said Mr Khaw had yet to answer that question. "He said he will consult people before the plan is implemented. My question is what kind of consultation is that going to be? Is it going to be like the consultation for casinos?" she asked.

Noting that residents in his Hougang constituency did not "pay a cent" for lift upgrading, he asked if the PAP Government was willing to do the same for all such projects. "The PAP Government has a lot of resources. It should be able to afford it for the residents. It does not need to increase the burden of the people and ask you for co-payment...I want the PAP to reply. Are they able to do it? But till now, there is no reply," he said.

...reminded the voters that the PAP had failed to deliver on promises it made in previous elections. "Didn't they promise to restore the CPF cut? Have they done so? We asked them before when it will be restored but so far, they have said nothing," he said.

'Be transparent in block selection for lift upgrading'
The Workers Party candidate for Nee Soon Central, Mr Lian Chin Way, last night called on the Government to be more transparent in how it selects blocks for lift upgrading. While he accepts that priority is given to constituencies held by the ruling PAP, he said he failed to understand how some newer estates had their lifts upgraded ahead of older estates like opposition-held Potong Pasir. "If there is a need for hospitals and library, there is a need. It has nothing to do with the party," he said, adding that demographics did not change overnight because of an election. "They cannot penalise the voters because they have chosen opposition party."

Ronald Wan, a true genius in whoring, gave a groundbreaking performance in the movie, and should continue to exhibit his capacity in more similar roles.

Breaking no ground
Why 'Crash' won, why 'Brokeback' lost and how the academy chose to play it safe.

Sometimes you win by losing, and nothing has proved what a powerful, taboo-breaking, necessary film "Brokeback Mountain" was more than its loss Sunday night to "Crash" in the Oscar best picture category.

Despite all the magazine covers it graced, despite all the red-state theaters it made good money in, despite (or maybe because of) all the jokes late-night talk show hosts made about it, you could not take the pulse of the industry without realizing that this film made a number of people distinctly uncomfortable.

More than any other of the nominated films, "Brokeback Mountain" was the one people told me they really didn't feel like seeing, didn't really get, didn't understand the fuss over. Did I really like it, they wanted to know. Yes, I really did.

In the privacy of the voting booth, as many political candidates who've led in polls only to lose elections have found out, people are free to act out the unspoken fears and unconscious prejudices that they would never breathe to another soul, or, likely, acknowledge to themselves. And at least this year, that acting out doomed "Brokeback Mountain."

For Hollywood, as a whole laundry list of people announced from the podium Sunday night and a lengthy montage of clips tried to emphasize, is a liberal place, a place that prides itself on its progressive agenda. If this were a year when voters had no other palatable options, they might have taken a deep breath and voted for "Brokeback." This year, however, "Crash" was poised to be the spoiler.

I do not for one minute question the sincerity and integrity of the people who made "Crash," and I do not question their commitment to wanting a more equal society. But I do question the film they've made. It may be true, as producer Cathy Schulman said in accepting the Oscar for best picture, that this was "one of the most breathtaking and stunning maverick years in American history," but "Crash" is not an example of that.

I don't care how much trouble "Crash" had getting financing or getting people on board, the reality of this film, the reason it won the best picture Oscar, is that it is, at its core, a standard Hollywood movie, as manipulative and unrealistic as the day is long. And something more.For "Crash's" biggest asset is its ability to give people a carload of those standard Hollywood satisfactions but make them think they are seeing something groundbreaking and daring. It is, in some ways, a feel-good film about racism, a film you could see and feel like a better person, a film that could make you believe that you had done your moral duty and examined your soul when in fact you were just getting your buttons pushed and your preconceptions reconfirmed.

So for people who were discomfited by "Brokeback Mountain" but wanted to be able to look themselves in the mirror and feel like they were good, productive liberals, "Crash" provided the perfect safe harbor. They could vote for it in good conscience, vote for it and feel they had made a progressive move, vote for it and not feel that there was any stain on their liberal credentials for shunning what "Brokeback" had to offer. And that's exactly what they did.

"Brokeback," it is worth noting, was in some ways the tamest of the discomforting films available to Oscar voters in various categories. Steven Spielberg's "Munich"; the Palestinian Territories' "Paradise Now," one of the best foreign language nominees; and the documentary nominee "Darwin's Nightmare" offered scenarios that truly shook up people's normal ways of seeing the world. None of them won a thing.

Hollywood, of course, is under no obligation to be a progressive force in the world. It is in the business of entertainment, in the business of making the most dollars it can. Yes, on Oscar night, it likes to pat itself on the back for the good it does in the world, but as Sunday night's ceremony proved, it is easier to congratulate yourself for a job well done in the past than actually do that job in the present.

How pop culture is actually beneficial...
This's a quite humourous Yale article correlating International Relations to characters in the O.C. Lol (Up-to-date with Season 3...)

If you haven't noticed, there's a whole lot going down on the international scene -- I'm talking Chloe Sevigny on Vincent Gallo in "The Brown Bunny" levels. (Or perhaps you prefer "Monica Lewinsky on Bill Clinton.")

Many of us don't understand the implications of a Hamas victory in Palestine, yet we understand the consequences of Marissa Cooper answering her sister's cell phone when Johnny the Surfer calls it on "The O.C."But maybe if we pretend the characters in "The O.C" are actually countries, then we'll understand what's going on in the world.

Welcome to the I.R., bitch. This is how it's done in International Relations:
The part of Ryan Atwood would be America. The USA is new to the scene, really a touching rags-to-riches story. He's the main character, so the decisions he makes are central to the show. He quickly became a source of power, making him a polarizing figure with the other characters. He may be rich now, but he hasn't lost his street cred -- don't piss off America, because he'll fight you quicker than a drunk, hair-gelled Q-packer at Toad's to prove it. He has a history with France, Iraq and Israel, but we'll meet them later. First we have to meet his mentor, Sandy, a.k.a Great Britain.

Great Britain is wise, he has been around the block. Consequently, he decided to take USA under his wing, even though most of the other parents hate America. Sometimes USA drags him into trouble, but only because Britain is loyal like a dog. He's not like the other parents who think pontification solves everything; he leads by doing. Britain enjoys English ale, but sometimes he'll get a taste of an Irish car bomb.

Seth Cohen is Israel, the Jewish son of Great Britain. America is his best friend and bodyguard, which gets America into lots of trouble because Israel isn't very popular at school. Sometimes America thinks if he were to drop Israel as a friend, many of America's I.R. problems would be gone.

The object of America's affection, Iraq, is Marissa Cooper. For a while, Iraq was stable, at least on the surface. But once she was penetrated by America, everything exploded. Now Iraq is a complete whack job, making everyone and everything around her unstable. She feels that her mom, France, didn't do enough to protect her. The only person who has been by her side this whole time is America, although he is fed up with her antics.

To make matters worse for Iraq, her little sister, Kaitlin Cooper a.k.a. Iran, is just plain awful. There's no other way to put it. It wasn't always this way -- she was tight with America and had a nice sibling rivalry going with Iraq. Then puberty turned her into a raging bitch … no, a bastard. If there were ever a girl that could be called a bastard, it is Iran. Immediately after puberty, she went to war with Iraq and began hating Israel and America because she knows if they aren't around she will wield much more power. Iran is doing everything she can to mess with Iraq, America, Britain, and Israel right now -- because she is socially backwards. Iran should think twice before she continues down this path, though, because in due time she will provoke the wrath of America.

Russia (Johnny the Surfer) felt he could give Iraq things that America couldn't. Unfortunately, he is a lame-ass. The guy brings nothing to the table, so in the battle for Iraq, he lost to America. In fact, he's basically America's bitch. He recently stirred things up by getting fresh with Iraq's sister, completely oblivious that Iran is just using him as a pawn in her devious scheme to rule The I.R.

Summer Roberts is Italy. Italy is the beauty who is always there to help out America and Iraq. On the surface, Italy is very different from Israel -- they have two completely different backgrounds and religions -- but they do have some similarities deep down, which is why they make a good couple.

Kristen Cohen would be Spain. Spain was very close to Britain, America and Israel, but she went through a rough time -- after getting bombed, she withdrew and quit trying to help America's relationship with Iraq. Spain has been relatively quiet in recent episodes.

Julie Cooper (or France) used to have it all; the Queen of the Parents. Now she lives in a trailer, loathed by all. One thing she hasn't lost, though, is her arrogance. France hates America because he screwed up Iraq. She will do anything to regain her clout, which includes getting closer with people like Iran and Russia. She has also used Spain's recent vulnerability to get closer to her.

Taylor Townsend is Saudi Arabia. America and the gang are sort of forced to be friends with Saudi Arabia, but they haven't forgotten how she backstabbed them. She is probably bipolar -- she'll blow you or blow you away, depending on which Saudi Arabia decides to show up.

Last, but least, we have Canada, originally known as Chilly. Canada is one of the least important characters on the show. His main role is to be the dork everyone laughs at.

I hope this rundown of international relations will help to dispel the "ignorant American" stereotype. (I knew my poli sci major would come in handy some day.)

And if you're wondering where my vast "O.C." knowledge comes from, well, my girlfriend gave me a refresher course. Seriously, I don't Tivo every episode. I don't wish Sandy Cohen was my dad. I don't drink every time someone on the show says "Newport" or every time Seth makes a pop culture reference.

Chinese New Year allows you to reflect and appreciate the meaning of family. And friends. I have my fair share of friends and as for you bunch of warts and farts, I wanna say you guys have been fei chang pang (loosely translated: very good) all these while despite the grievances, trival bitching, lazy ass-ing, bulling and taunting my sexuality (for the record, i'm bloody straight. if you don't believe, tell me, i will screw you hard then you know), the keep-in-touch-once-in-a-blue-birthday-moon and self absorbed (me included, but you too) ones. Don't get me wrong, I love your flaws as much as your strengths.

I've come to learn that some people drift away for a while, while others stick like glue. It's a natural process. It may be distance. It may be personal agenda. Or it may be health. But I guess it's man's (or woman for the feminists) intrinsic and instinctive nature to explore, hence we see friends come and go. But nevertheless, the pretty good ones are always around with open arms. Bitch if we want, Vent if we need, but at the end of the day, Love we must.

I'm writing this in my personal capacity. I wish I can say more but I shall be brief, due to certain people having short attention span (read: ivy). In Order of How Long I Know You.

Adeline: A lot of history between us and it speaks volumes of our bond, I suppose. Sometimes I wanna kill her, sometimes I love her to death! Thanks Adel, for understanding me so much!

Kris: Hey, I knew Bygon was invented to kill you. :-) Krispy is someone whom we can talk about anything (girls, especially) and thanks for being around in the past. But oh dear, we're talking lesser and scolding more each other these days. Dude, I really hope I'm wrong.

Ghim: Not as close as we used to be since hanging out after tutorials in orchard bitching about lazy project mates and discussing melt melt melt and co. Nonetheless, still my favourite despite his doubts about my sexuality. Ghim, I'm straight as a horny piece of rod and I will never have sex with you. So forget about it, okay?

Sterling: Smarty pants who gets his regular dose of orgasm from taunting me and correcting me and ego-sizing me. Someone whom I can share a good discourse or frivolous water cooler talk if he could remove his self-righteousness and ninny picking on every single word I say (hence, the discourse never ran its course)! Yes dude, let's not go there.

Ivy: Used to talk a lot and BITCH a lot, hence we're so comfortable with each other, so thanks honey. Nowdays, got distractions and always say will call back in the night but never happened! But still, someone I know I can share conversations with in a long, long time.

Ashley: Honestly, still in the process of knowing more about you, Ash. Can be rather intimidated by your loud demeanour and alpha-female vibes, but you're a fun person to be with! Your sardonic jokes can really be hur hur sometimes! :-)

And of course, those who are reading this...but quietly never put comment on the blog. I know who you are.

we are reporting live from ashley's house, there is a current intruder who keeps eatin the food on the table; and no, its not kris nipping the food, but rather bailey, ashley's larger than life (bigger than a dog) cat.

right now, bailey's in kris arms, reuniting with his lazier half.

while meanwhile, ronald takes off his top surreptiously in the corner of the room, trying on his numerous sunglasses.

adeline is wrapping her gift exchange.

jack is trying to figure out ashley's phone while sterling is in the toilet for god knows what reason. just so you know, he's been in there for quite a while.

Food List: Kris suggested ordering christmas packages from cold storage, butcher shop and continental delight.

Can i please remind you guys, everybody took one piece of the chicken last year and threw everything away. And the ham, only half was cut from the roll and it wasn't even finished.

The turkey is a novelty but the same scenario is likely to happen again this year. So please, Ashley has her hand up against cruelty to turkeys, NO TURKEY THIS YEAR ON MY DINING TABLE!

Oh and i forgot to add, I've already booked a Lana chocolate fudge cake for christmas. It's not like SUPER yummy but it tastes home made and it's still famous. Hehe.

If you want i think there's a lot of excess Baileys (I have half a bottle, Adeline has one, Ivy has one, Ron possibly has one too) around to soak the soft fluffy sponge in.

People people,

The time has come! And WE HAVE A VENUE FOR CHRISTMAS - at yours truly's humble abode.

Many will travel as far as Tampines just to come to this once in a life time event and watch the infamous photo whores i.e. Ron the boy toy/ toy boy (I'll let you know when Kris and Ivy makes up their mind or please refer to previous post) the self proclaimed gorgeous, preen and pose on a mock model runway.

The living room aka runway will be short I suppose but there will be free flow of good music courtesy of my brother's bose sound system (YES, DIE WITH JEALOUSY! MUAHAHA!) camera flashes and laughter.

Because cashflow is low, we will appreciate if cash donations can be made.

The planning is still in process, otherwise, STAY TUNED TO FIND OUT MORE!

Dear all, this is kris, reporting live from Ivy's residence.

We have a disturbing piece of news. both of us are couch potatoes and we are LOVING IT. We've managed to watch TV for 6hours (first 3 inclusive of Ron the Boy Toy) and then somemore later. Edward Scissorshand and now South Park.

We ate pizza (ordered in), Mcflurry (ordered in) and snacks (courtesy of Ron the Toy Boy), without moving an inch from the sofa.

Great discovery: Natasha Henstridge is HOT and LESBIANY.
